Coalition for the Homeless celebrates Harris County's FY21 budget

Yesterday, the Harris County Commissioners Court voted to adopt its FY 2021 budget. As part of that budget, the County has allocated $2.6 M for the homeless response system. This is a huge victory because it is the first time Harris County has allocated funds from their general fund for the homeless response system. The $2.6 M will be used to fill existing system gaps.

This is also a promising first step toward what we hope will be an annual allocation from the County of $13.9 M starting in FY 2022, which is what was recommended by the Harris County Homeless Task Force in their report that was unanimously accepted by the Court over the summer.

This victory was made possible thanks to the hard work of so many partners, including the leadership of agencies of The Way Home, who stepped up to publicly show their support; our friends at the County, including the members of the Court and their staffs, the Community Services Department, and the Budget Management Office; as well as our own staff at the Coalition.

We look forward to the work ahead to continue to make progress.
