Mayor Annise Parker headlines Three Decades of Achievement event with personal story Houston, Texas (December 3, 2012)
The Board and staff of the Coalition for the Homeless of Houston/Harris County will recognize three decades of achievement in the community with a fundraising luncheon event on Friday, April 5, 2013. Local ABC-13 anchor Melanie Lawson will serve as the emcee, and Mayor Annise Parker will provide the keynote address by sharing a personal story with a connection to homelessness not often told -“Our Journey With Our Son.” Honorary Chairs for the event are the Coalition’s founders, Archbishop Joseph A. Fiorenza, Rabbi Samuel E. Karff, Reverend William A. Lawson, The Honorable Jon Lindsay and The Honorable Kathryn Whitmire.
Stated Marilyn L. Brown, president and CEO of the Coalition for the Homeless, “Our organization was founded to be a convener and a source of support for the many partner organizations in this community that provide services to help advocate for members of the community who are homeless. At the Coalition we work exhaustively to educate the community on how we can help and pursue the goal of eradicating homelessness in Houston, Harris County and Fort Bend County. While we look forward to celebrating our success stories, we also wish to highlight the needs that are still in existence in our community. And, we are delighted that Mayor Parker has agreed to share a personal story with our guests at our 30th anniversary event.”
The Coalition recently launched a progressive new user-friendly web site with the help of The Lee Group and funded by St. Luke’s Episcopal Health Charities. The content rich site, www.homelesshouston.org serves as a more effective research and education tool for the Coalition’s many partner organizations. It also serves local citizens who need information on services and programs that directly impact individuals and families in the community who are facing homelessness. The “Find a Provider” map and information section provides a comprehensive access point for people who need to find the right kind of service provider for their or their clients’ needs. Further, there is an entire segment of the site devoted to Houston’s Continuum of Care process for addressing homelessness as a community concern – not a personal one.
2013 Friends of the Homeless Awards
Many local heroes go unnoticed. We would like to recognize some of them. The Coalition for the Homeless of Houston/Harris County is calling for nominations for our “Friends of the Homeless Awards”. These awards are designed to recognize outstanding contributions made to the homeless community or those who have set an inspiring example to others through their efforts and passion. If this fits the description of an individual, group or organization that you know, please submit their name using the Nomination Form and return the form to nominations@homelesshouston.org by March 5th.
